Gifts For A Greener, Debt-free Christmas

Christmas is a time for beer, cheer and maxed out credit cards.

While there is no guaranteed hangover cure, there is a way to ease the pain to the hip pocket caused by overspending.

Wollongong City Council waste management officer Fiona Netting has the perfect Christmas gift ideas that are kind to the wallet.

``Gift giving doesn't have to be an expensive exercise" she said.

``There are many things you can do to reuse everyday items around the home to make great gifts for your friends and family.

``With a little forward planning and creative thinking you can make a quality, attractive and practical present for someone or even Christmas decorations for your home."

A wire coat hanger, plastic shopping bags and small Christmas decorations was all that was needed to make a wreath for the front door, Ms Netting said.

``Bend the coat hanger to a circular shape and cut strips of plastic approximately 10-20cm in length and 1-2 cm wide," she said.

``Tie the strips of plastic around the wire and push together for a thick bushy effect.

``To finish off, add the small decorations at the top of the circular wreath."

Ms Netting said another great gift idea was a plant in a recycled hanging pot.

``Use a one litre milk carton, some twine and potting mix to make a pot for a small plant," she said

Other ideas include decoupage paperweights using smooth faced rocks, or decoupage pencil tins.

``Home-made cookies, chocolates or a slice are always a popular treat and look great in a hand painted glass jar," she said.
