KEEPING your little angels entertained this Christmas holidays does not have to cost heaven and earth.

This year, avoid the onslaught of "I'm bored" by trying some simple - and inexpensive - holiday activities.

Whether you want to get out and about or try something new at home, with a bit of creativity you will have the kids distracted in no time.

Bellambi mother of three Darcelle Wu said that doing things at home was an enjoyable way to start the holidays.

Creating a vegetable patch or compost system, or giving kids a cooking lesson can be a productive way to pass the time, without spending up big.

"For the first few weeks we relax at home and do nothing," Mrs Wu said.

"You don't have to go out all the time and go crazy spending. Family is more important, so just enjoy being together."

Mrs Wu, who is taking her children to Queensland this Christmas, said she saved money by buying less extravagant gifts and opting to stay with family.

When they return home, Mrs Wu said the family would spend most of its time going to the beach and enjoying the outdoors.

Finding new and exciting things for children to enjoy can be as simple as logging on to community-based websites like Tourism Wollongong or Northern Illawarra Online, to check event listings.

Weekend markets, museum tours and workshops at youth centres can make for hours of fun.

"You don't have to spend a lot to enjoy your time together," Mrs Wu said.
